અવકાશયાત્રીની વાત આવે ત્યારે સુનીતા વિલિયમ્સનું નામ મોખરે આવે તે સ્વાભાવિક છે. અચરજની વાત એ છે કે ભારતીય મૂળની સુનીતા વિલિયમ્સ ક્યારેય અવકાશયાત્રી બનવા નહોતાં માગતાં પણ તેઓ પશુઓના ડૉક્ટર બનવા માગતાં હતાં! તે તેમનું બાળપણનું સપનું હતું, બાળપણમાં તેમણે ક્યારેય અવકાશયાત્રી વિશેનું વિચાર્યું જ નહોતું. તેમને સ્વિમિંગનો શોખ હતો. કારણ કે તેઓ એથ્લિટ હતાં.
આ દરમિયાન તેમના મોટા ભાઈએ એક સલાહ આપી હતી કે તું નેવી કે નેવલ એકડેમી માટે કેમ નથી વિચારતી? પછી તેમણે પણ મોટાભાઈની વાતનો વિચાર કરીને નેવલ એકેડેમી જોઈન કરી હતી જેમાં તેઓ પાઇલટ પણ બન્યાં! પણ તેઓ તો જેટ પાઇલટ બનવા માગતાં હતાં અને બન્યાં હેલિકોપ્ટર પાઇલટ!! તેઓ ૧૯૯૮માં નાસા ગયાં હતાં અને અવકાશમાં વર્ષ ૨૦૦૬માં ગયાં હતાં. આ બંને સમયગાળા દરમિયાન સ્પેસમાં જવાનો અવસર તેમને ૨૦૦૨માં મળ્યો હતો.
આ અરસામાં ૨૦૦૩ની કોલંબિયાવાળી દુર્ઘટનાથી તેમના મિત્રોને તેમણે ગુમાવ્યા અને શટલ પ્રોગ્રામને સંપૂર્ણપણે રોકવામાં આવ્યો હતો. પણ સમય જતા તેમને શટલમાં જવા માટે ટ્રેનિંગ પણ મળી અને સ્વપ્ન પૂર્ણ કરવાનો અવસર પણ! સ્પેસ ક્રાફ્ટમાં ગયા પછી પણ તેમને આબધું કાલ્પનિક જ લાગતું હતું! પણ અવકાશમાં જતાં જ આ કલ્પના હકીકત બની હતી. તેમણે ઘણો સમય સ્પેસમાં વિતાવ્યો છે. વિશ્વભરના સફળ અવકાશયાત્રીઓમાં સુનીતા વિલિયમ્સનું નામ પ્રથમ હરોળમાં લેવાય છે.
