થોડા સમય પહેલાં મિસ યુનિવર્સનો ખિતાબ ભારતીય મહિલા હરનાઝ કૌરને મળ્યો અને તે ચર્ચામાં આવી. આ પહેલાં મિસ યુનિવર્સનો ખિતાબ લારા દત્તા અને સુસ્મિતા સેન મેળવી ચૂકી છે. આ ઉપરાંત એક અન્ય નામ પણ છે રીતા ફારિયાનું. રીતા ફારિયા આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય મંચ પર ભારતનો ડંકો વગાડનાર પહેલી વિશ્વસુંદરી છે.
ઇન્ડિયન ફેશન આઇકોન રહેલી રીતા ફારિયાએ ફેશન ઇન્ડસ્ટ્રીમાં સૌથી મોટા મંચ પર ફક્ત ભારતનું જ નહીં પરંતુ સમગ્ર એશિયાનું નામ રોશન કર્યુ હતું. ૧૯૬૬માં તેમના મસ્તક પર મિસ વર્લ્ડનો તાજ પહેરાવવામાં આવ્યો. આવું કરનારી ભારતીય અને એશિયાઈ મૂળની પહેલી મિસ વર્લ્ડ બની હતી.
૨૩ ઓગસ્ટ, ૧૯૪૫માં જન્મેલી રીતા ફારિયાનો જન્મ મુંબઇમાં થયો હતો. તેનાં માતાપિતા મૂળ ગોવાનાં હતાં. રીતા સૌથી પહેલાં મિસ બોમ્બે ક્રાઉન જીતી હતી અને એના પછી ૧૯૬૬માં ફર્સ્ટ મિસ વર્લ્ડનો ખિતાબ જીત્યો હતો.
તમને જાણીને નવાઇ લાગશે કે મિસ વર્લ્ડ કોન્ટેસ્ટ દરમિયાન રીતા ફારિયાએ બેસ્ટ ઇન સ્વિમસૂટ અને બેસ્ટ ઇન ઇવનિંગ વૅર જેવાં સબટાઇટલ પણ જીત્યાં હતાં. પછી ઇવેન્ટનો ક્લાઇ મેક્સ તેના મસ્તક પર મિસ વર્લ્ડથી પૂર્ણ થયો. આ ઈવેન્ટમાં તેમણે ૫૧ દેશોમાંથી આવેલી સુંદરીઓને માત આપી હતી. બ્યુટી કોન્ટેસ્ટમાં સામેલ થનારી બધી વિનર્સ મોટા ભાગે મોડેલિંગ અને ફિલ્મો તરફ ઝંપલાવતી હોય છે, પરંતુ રીતા ફારિયા આ બધામાં અલગ નીકળ્યાં. તેમણે પોતાની કરિયરને લઇને કંઈક બીજું જ પ્લાન કરી રાખ્યું હતું.
મિસ વર્લ્ડનો ખિતાબ જીત્યા પછી એક વર્ષ સુધી તેમને અનેક ફિલ્મોમાં ઓફર મળી. તેમ છતાં તેમણે પોતાનું સમગ્ર ધ્યાન મેડિકલના અભ્યાસ પર ફોકસ કરવાનું વિચાયું હતું. પરિણામે રીતા ફારિયાએ મુંબઇની માન્ટ મેડિકલ કૉલેજ અને સર જમશેદજી જીજાબાઇ ગ્રૂપ ઓફ હોસ્પિટલમાંથી એમબીબીએસનો અભ્યાસ પૂર્ણ કર્યો. એમબીબીએસ કર્યા બાદ રીતા ફારિયા લંડનની કિંગ્સ કૉલેજ અને હોસ્પિટલ સાથે જોડાયાં અને ત્યાં જ પોતાનો આગળનો અભ્યાસ પૂર્ણ કર્યો. કહેવાય છે કે મિસ વર્લ્ડનો તાજ જીત્યા બાદ તેમણે એક વર્ષ સુધી મોડેલિંગ કર્યુ હતું. એ પછી મોડેલિંગનું ફિલ્ડ છોડીને ડૉક્ટરનો અભ્યાસ કરીને હેલ્થ સેક્ટરમાં જ પોતાની કરિયર બનાવી.
આજથી પાંચ દાયકા પહેલાં મહિલા માટે કરિયર બનાવવી સરળ નહોતી. એ પછી કોઇપણ ફિલ્ડ કેમ ન હોય. જે જમાનામાં લોકો ફેશનની દુનિયાથી અલિપ્ત હોય એ જમાનામાં ફેશનની દુનિયામાં ઝંપલાવવું અને બ્યુટી તરીકે જાહેરમાં આવવું એ અત્યારે જેટલું સરળ છે એટલું એ સમયમાં નહોતું. એમાંય આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય મંચ સુધી પહોંચવું ઘણું મુશ્કેલ હતું. આ મુશ્કેલ સફરમાંથી રીતા ફારિયાએ સફર કર્યું. મુશ્કેલીને પાર કરીને રીતા ફારિયા મિસ વર્લ્ડના મંચ પર પહોચી પણ ખરી અને એમાં સફળતા મેળવીને ઝંપી.
વર્ષો પહેલાં ફેશન જગતને બાયબાય કહી ચૂકેલી રીતા ફારિયા ૧૯૯૮માં એક વખત ફરી ફેશન ઇન્ડસ્ટ્રી સાથે જોડાઇ. આ વખતે તે બ્યુટી કોન્ટેસ્ટમાં જજના રૂપમાં જોવા મળ્યાં હતાં. આ ઉપરાંત મિસ વર્લ્ડ પ્રતિયોગિતામાં પણ તેમને જજ તરીકે સામેલ કરવામાં આવ્યાં હતાં.
