The country has a full day work week from Monday to Thursday (7:30 am to 3:30 pm) and a half day on Friday (7:30 am to noon).
• Scotland reduced working hours by 20% to align with the four-day working week. :- Scotland has started a four-day working week on a trial basis as promised by the ruling party during the campaign. Employees cut their working hours by 20% but suffer no loss in compensation. A $13.8 million pilot program is sponsored by the Scottish National Party (SNP) to experiment with a shortened working week.
• Spain announced a 32 hour work week for three years. :- Like Scotland, Spain also announced a pilot four-day work week. The government has agreed to a 32-hour work week for three years without any cuts to workers' compensation. This is done to reduce the risk to the employers and the government will pay the salary difference to the companies. The pilot program is being conducted with an investment of about $60 million.
• Japan to End Their 'Overwork Death' Culture:- Following in the footsteps of Spain, Japan is considering implementing a four-day work week. The decision is somewhat surprising because Japan has a hustle-bustle work culture and people die from overwork because they have little time for vacation. Earlier, Microsoft Japan launched the "Work-Life Choice Challenge 2019 Summer" where the company gave its 2,300 employees the opportunity to "choose a variety of flexible work styles according to work and life circumstances." At the end of the program, the company saw a 40% increase in productivity.
• Iceland has seen significant improvement in work-life balance. :- From 2015 to 2019, Iceland conducted a study on 2500 employees working 35 to 36 hour weeks without any pay cuts. The pilot project was conducted in different types of workplaces to test whether shortening work weeks lead to a more productive and happier workforce.
The results were analyzed by Autonomy and the Association for Sustainability and Democracy. Because of the extremely positive results and happier employees, trade unions demanded a reduction in working hours. Additionally, nearly 90% of employees in the country have shifted to either shorter hours or other accommodations, which has significantly improved work-life balance.
• New Zealand begins a year-long 4-day work week.:- Multinational consumer goods company Unilever New Zealand started a year-long four-day work week for its employees in December 2020 without any pay cut. The program yielded positive results on productivity and work-life balance.
• Ireland will launch a six-month pilot program in 2022. :-The Four Day Week Ireland campaign has undertaken a six-month pilot program to test the four-day work week. The scheme was officially launched in June 2021
