ભારતની ઘણી મહિલાઓ વિશ્વભરમાં નામના કમાઇ રહી છે. વિદેશમાં રહીને પણ ભારતનું નામ રોશન કરનારી મહિલાઓમાં કલ્પના ચાવલાનું નામ મોખરે લેવાય છે! કલ્પના ચાવલાનો જન્મ ૧૭ માર્ચ, ૧૯૬૨માં હરિયાણામાં થયો હતો. કલ્પના ચાવલાને અભ્યાસમાં વિજ્ઞાન પ્રતિ ખૂબ રસ હતો. નાનપણથી જ તેઓ ફ્લાઇટ એન્જિનિયર બનવાનાં સપનાં જોતાં હતાં.
તેમણે તેમનું આ સ્વપ્ન પૂર્ણ કરવા પંજાબ એન્જિનિયરીંગ કૉલેજના એરોનોટિકલ એન્જિનિયરીંગમાં એડમિશન પણ લીધું અને આ અભ્યાસ પૂર્ણ થતા જ તેમને નોકરીની ઓફર મળવા લાગી પણ તેમણે તો અવકાશયાત્રી બનવાનાં જ સપનાં સેવવાં માંડ્યાં હતાં! ૨૦ વર્ષની વયે જ તેઓ વધુ
અભ્યાસઅર્થ અમેરિકા ગયા હતા અને યુનિ.ઓફ ટેક્સાસમાં બે વર્ષ એરોસ્પેસ એન્જિનિયરીંગમાં માસ્ટર ડિગ્રી મેળવી હતી. ત્યારબાદ ૧૯૮૬માં તેમણે બીજી માસ્ટર્સ ડિગ્રી પણ હાંસલ કરી. વિશેષમાં તેમણે એરોસ્પેસ એન્જિનિયરીંગમાં પીએચ.ડી પણ કર્યું.
તેમની પાસે કોમર્શિયલ પાઇલટનું લાઇસન્સ પણ હતું! અને તેઓ સર્ટિફાઇડ ફ્લાઇટ ઇન્સ્ટ્રક્ટર પણ હતાં. વર્ષ ૧૯૯૩માં તેમણે નાસામાં એપ્લાય કર્યું હતું પણ તેને નામંજૂર કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું! તેમણે હાર ન માનતા ૧૯૯૫માં તેમની પસંદગી અવકાશયાત્રી તરીકે કરવામાં આવી અને ૧૯૯૮માં તેમણે તેમની પ્રથમ અવકાશી ઉડાન સાકાર કરી! તેમણે તેમની પ્રથમ ઉડાનમાં ૩૭૨ કલાક વિતાવ્યા અને છેલ્લે સ્પેસ શટલ ક્રેશમાં જ ૧ ફેબ્રુઆરી ૨૦૦૩ના રોજ તેમનું અવસાન થયું.

He did not give up and in 1995 he was selected as an astronaut and in 1998 he made his first space flight!
